Charity Hack 2009

I have been extremely busy lately and I have totally neglected my blog over the last few months and I thought I would make a quick post.

A few weeks ago I participated on Charity Hack 2009 hosted by PayPal and sponsored by JustGiving and MissionFish with the aim to build an app in 24 hours over the weekend and overall after all hacks we won the second prize.

Iman Samizadeh and Dave Erasmus in PayPal (eBay) offices
Over 100 developers gathered at the PayPal offices in Richmond and it was great fun seeing all the geeks as night code vampires pushing theirs app to be ready for next morning. I guess for Paypal’s and other sponsors it was a quick look into how real world developers could use those new API’s launched by JustGiving and MissionFish in new application and make payment and donation giving using Paypal API in combination.

The first day after the registration we get put together in teams with other randoms.  The idea we came across was an iPhone application to make a spontaneous donation to charity on seeing a poster or paper/tube advert also using a text message or a mobile website using for JustGiving and we called the project “GetGiving”.

We have managed to won the second prize. The winning team included Anshu Nagar, codngintellgnce, Johanna Kollmann, Mark Wenger, Dave Erasmus and obviously myself as a back-end coder.

So that was a little insight into what is going on and finally here is  a quick preview of the related links.
